My first post...
So what I have decided to do is, as we are on the same trip is to first read heather´s blog and then add the bits which were missing. So first things first, we arrived at 11am on the monday. We got through customs un scathed, unless you believe having a very cheery customs officer who was singing while stamping our passports "un-scathed".
After customs we decided to get a drink so we could break our large pesos. Alex went off to grab a drink and I sat at a table while the others went to the bathroom. Then enters my first real experience with spanish, a girl walks upto the table I am sitting at (the table being part of the cafe we were at so I thought I was prepared). She looks at me and says "hola....." which is when I realised the rest of the sentence was spanish from someone who speaks spanish to someone who does not. My preparations were then thrown out the window " i was going to try and say "mi espero para mi amiga" which although may not be correct would have achieved some kind of understanding I hope. Instead I froze pointed at alex (who at this time had just purchased a botea de água sin gas) and hoped that sign language was enough. To this waitress looked and kind of smiled slightly and walked off, I am still trying to remember what she said to me, to no avail. Spanish - 1 Bren - 0.
We eventually arrived at our hostel after some bargain hunting (reading the lonely planet guide to find the easiest transport from the airport) and after some excellent navigational choices ( like getting out of the taxi and walking away from out hostel after following dave and i....don´t know what we were thinking).
It was good to get some half english half spanish in the hostel (english to us spanish to everyone else) and we settled into our room.
Now I will skip to later that night....So there we were we survived till 530pm and decided that was enough so we all crashed out. Around 10pm ish I started to open my eyes a little to find out that the pub music was booming (there is a pub connected to the hostel) so I decided no more sleep, time to read or something. Venturing my way down to the first floor kitchen to read, I remembered that there was a pub crawl, so when heather came down too we decided that we would check out the pub at least. By 11 all of us were down there in the pub having a quilmes and noticing that there were alot of foreigners there. We chatted to an aussie for a bit and heather and dave decided we should just follow the pub crawl for a bit to find some of the good places near to our hostel.
The pub crawl was fun, we got to meet a few people and learnt about some other hostels and some eating spots, shame we were a bit tired, it could have been a big night. There is always next time, for now however it is time for caramel spread on bread....mmm my favourite!
