Sri Lanka
I know it's been a while since I've updated but things have been a little busy. For the last two weeks I've been staying at the National Institute of Health Sciences in Kalutara (hour south of Colombo). For those who don't know, by thesis is on:
"Knowledge, attitudes and practices of health care workers, NGO's and disabled persons organizations regarding disability and disability issues in Kalutara District, Sri Lanka"
Which basically means "what do people think about disability and hence how does this influence how disability is experienced" e.g. if teachers don't think disabled kids in their class are capable of learning, they probably won't.
So far I've visited some homes for disabled kids, and spoken to some health care workers. It's been pretty interesting actually.
The weekends have been free to travel and so far I've visited the south west and the south coast (travelling with a bunch of Sweedish nurses also staying here at the institute). I've snorkled abit (saw a whole lot of big sea turtles, some were so close I could have grabbed them, and I also spotted this lobsted but when I dived down to grab it, it jammed itself in this little cave, lobster: 1, Khai Lin: 0).
I have learnt to surf as well. I took a lesson and have been given heaps of tips from the numerous surfie bums, mostly from Europe who come to escape the winter. The first time I stood up and stayed up on the board was a pretty amazing feeling, I can see how it gets addictive.
Anyway cheers everyone, and happy Chinese New Year for yesterday.
